Thanks Linda for being so magnanimous. I assure you that Ken is not the only one but only judicial process will sort out the rest of the lads. These fellows have lived awful lives and they really do need help and that is what the court case is about.

I forgot to say that Paul has done a lot more than just write. He has – pretty much single handedly – brought the issue of alleged abuse at St Bede’s under Monsignor Duggan to public attention, and has succeeded in getting the matter brought to trial. That is an achievement. And it is an achievement whether you think that the allegations are all true or are all fantasy. I have done my own share of trying to change the world, and I can assure Benedict that it is bloody hard work.

(Just for the record, I was skeptical when Paul first made those allegations. I didn’t consider them to be impossible, but I was concerned that the only evidence he was offering in support of them were innuendo and claims made at second or third hand by people who appeared to be anonymous. However, I recently read a post by someone called Ken Horne, relating his own personal experiences, and it convinced me that at least some of these allegations have substance.)

Paul, what I think you have done is come up with a hypothesis that is not impossible and which (arguably) joins a few dots. But it is mostly speculation. If you want anyone to regard it as more than that you have to produce some real evidence. That will be difficult after all these years. The easiest approach might be to look for any evidence that suggests tabes dorsalis, a condition that often accompanies tertiary syphilis, and which is fairly obvious.

I perhaps am well informed but hardly intelligent, more a middle of the road product of Longsight in its glorious post war hay day.
If you expect me to dumb down like the rest of the world has done, I can’t, I am already at the bottom of the shit heap, any lower and I’m afraid it would be unreadable gibberish nonsense. Something along the lines of the present main stream media.

What I did not understand was what you are talking about. I may, of course, be stupid and poorly informed, but if you want to be understood by as many people as possible you need to write in a way that even stupid, poorly informed people can understand. Of course, you may prefer to write only for the elite who are as intelligent and well informed as yourself.

Salvarsan was discovered in 1912 by Erlich, I think is name was. It was an Arsenic based injection that was as bad in its side affects as the mercury based treatment it replaced. It was popular for a time until the horror of the side affects took shape and eventually most continued with their syphilis rather than take the injections.

I have to agree with James. Most of your posts are well written – sometimes very well written – and clear (even if, as often, I disagree with them). But I am struggling to understand this one. The problem may be that you didn’t provide enough context: not everyone is up to date with all aspects of UK news, and allusions that are meaningful to you may not be so to others.

Benedict has a point, but on the other hand it’s not very realistic to expect someone aged 67 to start doing the things he suggests. Writing a blog to highlight problems and stir things up a bit is better than doing nothing at all.
